• Pro-China gangs attack democracy protesters in Hong Kong

The leaders of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests threatened to call off talks on the territory’s democratic future today unless the government did more to stop “organised attacks” on demonstrators.

The threat, from a coalition of student groups and the Occupy Central protesters, came after clashes in various parts of the city in what appeared to be an orchestrated backlash against the protests.

Student leaders abruptly called off talks with the Hong Kong government last night after a day of escalating scuffles between pro-democracy protesters and tattooed thugs thought to have been paid to inject violence into otherwise peaceful demonstrations.

The outbreaks of fighting added fresh tension to protests involving tens of thousands of students and activists from the Occupy movement who have dominated the streets for nearly a week in hot and humid temperatures.
